We are delighted to introduce our investigation of Sutton House! This is an exclusive location to Fright Nights London and we cannot wait to investigate the house and grounds.
What secrets does this Tudor house hold? Built in 1535 by Ralph Sadleir, in the heart of the East End as a family home for him and his wife Helen Barre. Ralph was a close aide to Thomas Cromwell in the court of Henry VIII, whose missions were in connection to the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
In 1627 silk merchant Captain John Milward, of the East India Company bought the house. John and his wife Anne had lots of rich imported silks andfurnishings throughout Sutton House to show off to their guests but they hit hard times in the 1630’s when the popularity of American Cotton caused the price of silk to drop suddenly. John then had to mortgage the house to a colleague at the East India Company.
The house was divided into two houses in 1751 by John Cox, named Ivy House and Milford House. Over the years, the house has been used as a school, a local fire warden (during the second world war), and even held rock concerts in the barn during the 1980’s.
