Standing opposite the 17 mile stone to London in the village of Colnbrook, it has a vast and colourful history, with well over 60 reported murders. The most famous of all the murders, were those committed in the 17th century by the landlord of the time, Jarman, who with his wife, made a very profitable side-line by murdering their guests after they had retired for the night.
They had a trap door built into the floor of one of their bedrooms and when a suitably rich candidate arrived, Jarman would inform his wife that "a fat pig was available if she wanted one!" She would reply by asking her husband to put him in the sty for "till the morrow". The bedstead was hinged and they would tip the sleeping victim into a vat of boiling liquid immediately below, thus killing him.
But that is not the end of the Inns haunted history. To this day, guests wake to the sensation of someone sitting on the end of their bed, a baby’s cry is often heard, glasses fly off the bar, a phantom is seen in the upstairs ladies powder room and all this along with loud footsteps often heard on the floor above the bar.
Investigated by, Great British Ghosts, Most Haunted, The Ghost Club and Ghost Hunters International, it is truly a location not to be missed. Dare you join us for the night to investigate this very haunted, world-famous Inn where many of those murdered are said to haunt?
Once the guests who are dining have finished their meals, we will collect you to join us in the atmospheric upstairs function room. An original feature room dating back over 500 years, where candles are blown out at night and mysteriously light back up again.
Reputed to be the third oldest Inn in England, with its foundation stones being laid back in 1106 when Henry I was on the throne. It was originally named "The Hospice", but over the centuries this has been corrupted to its current name: "The Ostrich".
Other historical visitors said to have frequented the Ostrich include Dick Turpin, who used the Inn as a hideout, escaping the Bow Street Runners by jumping out of a window and King John who is rumoured to have stopped at the Inn on his way to Runnymede to sign the Magna Carta.
Having undergone a major refurbishment last year, there are now 11 bedrooms available to hire with most of them still experiencing paranormal activity to this day. This includes the famous Blue Room (Room 11) where the landlord and his wife constructed a trapdoor to carry out their 60 murders. This room will be included in every event at this location and if any other guests choose to book a room, we will ask you very nicely if we may visit your room throughout the event as well, enhancing the experience for everyone.
